Didirikan pada 1899 oleh 12 pemain sepak bola berasal dari Swiss, Inggris, dan Spanyol dibawah pimpinan Joan Gamper. FC Barcelona memiliki motto "Barca bukan hanya sekedar klub" (El Barça, és més que un club) serta memiliki himne yang berjudul "El Cant del Barca" yang diciptakan oleh Jaume Picas and Josep Maria Espinàs. Tidak seperti klub sepak bola pada umumnya, FC Barcelona benar-benar milik dan dioperasikan oleh para suporternya. Stadion utamanya berada di Camp Nou, Barcelona.

Sponsor
Barça dikenal selalu menolak memasang logo sponsor pada seragam sepak bolanya karena Barca dianggap sebagai simbol Katalonia, dan segala macam tawaran sponsor yang "bersifat mengganggu" akan ditolak. Meskipun begitu, tim bola basket Barca diizinkan memasang logo sponsor pada seragamnya. Pada 7 September 2006, klub mengumumkan kesepakatan 5 tahun dengan UNICEF yang mengizinkan logo UNICEF untuk ditempatkan di kaos. Barcelona kemudian akan menyumbangkan 0,7% dari total pendapatan per tahun kepada UNICEF selama lima tahun.Mengawali musim 2011-12, klub Katalan ini meninggalkan tradisinya yang enggan memasang sponsor di kostum. Mereka akan memakai nama Qatar Foundation yang dicantumkan di bagian depan kaus pemain. Sementara kerjasama dengan Unicef tetap berjalan.
